West Milford Volunteers Needed for Bio-terrorism Preparedness Training
The ever-present threat of a terrorist attack has made it necessary for local municipalities to plan and prepare for the safety and well being of their residents. In the event of a bio-terrorism attack, involving smallpox or other bacterial outbreaks, a POD (Point of Dispensing) would be used to inoculate and dispense medication to area residents.
On Wednesday, April 6, 2005, West Milford will be participating with Ringwood, Wanaque and other area municipalities in a POD exercise. The Federal government will provide the vaccine, administration supplies, written directions, video demonstrations, the necessary forms and specific information related to the medications. Each municipality must provide its share of personnel.
People with experience/expertise in the following areas are especially needed: Nurses, Triage, EMT, Referral Personnel, Medical Screeners, Translators, Vaccinators, Clinic Managers, Physician Evaluators, Medical Record Data Entry, Supply Managers, Security/Traffic Control.
Even if you have no experience in First Aid, medicine or as a First-Responder, you can still be a volunteer. Additional positions include:
Reception -- Health/Public Health Professionals, Registered Nurses
- Outside/Inside Debriefing – Mental Health Professionals, Crisis Counselors, Licensed Practical or Registered Nurses, Health Educators, Social Workers, Others with special training in counseling
- Outside/Inside Sick Bay – EMT/Paramedics, Physician Assistants (must have Physician on site), Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses
- Triage – Individuals must demonstrate sound and quick assessment and decision making skills, Health/Public Health Professionals, EMT/Paramedics, Registered Nurses
- Registrations/Education/Self-Screening (RESS) – Individuals must demonstrate sound and quick assessment and decision making skills, Health/Public Health Professionals, Administrative or Clerical staff
- Medication Dispensing – Registered Nurses, Advanced Practice Nurses, Physicians, Pharmacists (depending on training and type of prophylaxis), Pharmacy Technicians (depending on training and type of prophylaxis), Licensed Practical Nurses (depending on training and type of prophylaxis)
- Medical Screening – Registered Nurses, Advanced Practical Nurses, Physicians
- After Care/Observation -- Registered Nurses, EMT/Paramedics, Physician Assistants (must have Physician on site), Licensed Practical Nurse
- Registration – Administrative professionals, Clerical Staff
- Education – Health Educators, Registered Nurses, Health/Public Health professionals
- Medical Consultation – Physicians, Advanced Practice Nurses, Health/Public Health professionals
- Check-in – Administrative professionals, Clerical Staff
- Staff Trainer – Area leaders
- Security Liaison – Law enforcement, Security personnel, Military personnel
- Security Staff – Law enforcement, Security personnel, Military personnel
- Translators – Multi-lingual staff
- Hospitality – Administrative professionals, Clerical staff
- Housekeeping – Housekeeping personnel
- Communications Technician – Equipment technician, IT technical specialist
