Request for Hurricane Sandy Emergency Disaster Services Volunteers

The Salvation Army New Jersey Division is currently seeking additional volunteers who are interested in volunteering with our ongoing Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

Duties:

Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) volunteers join The Salvation Army in providing physical, emotional, and spiritual comfort and support wherever and whenever disaster strikes. EDS volunteers are the kind faces and helping hands that support police, firefighters and other first responders while assisting families and communities to recover from floods, fires, and other tragedies. Duties include set up, cooking and serving food, snacks and/or beverages to first responders or victims. Volunteers will also be required to keep the site clean and help with unloading, cleaning and preparing the canteen for the next response. Training will be provided for all EDS volunteers as it is required prior to responding.

Qualifications:

Volunteer should be able to adhere to The Salvation Army's Disaster and Recovery Services policies and procedures. Volunteer should maintain a non-judgemental attitude; be sensitive to and aware of cultural differences and customs and be able to communicate well with people of diverse backgrounds. Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Volunteer should have a somewhat flexible schedule, be able to work in a stressful, high-activity area and be able to lift at least 20lbs. All volunteers will be required to undergo a background check prior to volunteering.

Anyone interested in volunteering for The Salvation Army’s ongoing Hurricane Sandy Relief effort should visit www.salvationarmynj.org/sandy and complete the online application form.
